Geometry learning through songs
Hello everyone!
Today I bring you a great idea to make children learn geometry in a funny way: music!
If we know a child since they are very young, we know that one of the things they enjoy the most is listening to different kinds of music and songs. Taking that into account, we are also able to see that it continues to be present as they grow old, overall having a great interest in listening to music and dancing. Because of this, we can suppose that implementing songs for learning in class, in this case geometrical contents, would be a great way of potentiating a significant, easy learning.
Some of the advantages of learning through songs are the following:
- Memory improvement: linguistic structures are learned easier if it is done through music. By using the geometrical contents as part of the song lyrics, accompanied with melody and rhythm, children will be more open to memorize them and it will happen in a more fluid way through a more participative attitude of the students.
- Imagination promotion: if students are asked to create a song using the geometrical contents to be learnt, not only they will work on them for a long time, but they will have to think about them and reflect about their significance to include them in a coherent way. Also, they could have to make connections with other elements or create situations out of their imagination to give all the song a common sense or story to tell, so their creativity is promoted and developed at the same time they are working on geometry.
- Music as a emotional element: with songs, our emotional state can improve, so with them we can make students be in a better mode to learn and take part in the educational process. Like this, even if someone is not keen on maths, if the mathematical knowledge is part of a song, not only they understand it better but they are also with a better attitude to confront learning. Also, this mode improvement for the all class can provoke a general improvement in the class environment, that can make a great difference in every teaching-learning process made in class.
- Social element: music has always been something to be shared between people. Then, by using songs in class it will also occur that children improve their social relationships with their classmates. Music is something that is fun to listen to, so by sharing laughs while singing and dancing, and also if the work together to create one, collaborating and creating a group thing, they create special bonds and therefore acquire essential social skills for their lives.
- Artistic expression: art works can be produced from the songs, promoting their abilities of comprehension and creation of drawings, stories.. based on what the music tells them. Like this, not only they would learn geometry, but they could also apply that knowledge to many different educational areas such as art, but also Spanish Language, English Language or even Physical Education.
- Motor skills improvement: by using songs, they could implement hand gestures or even dances that would be related to what is said in the lyrics. Like this, they work on the geometrical contents in one than more sense, facilitating understanding and their learning through what would be called as learning by doing, which is demonstrated to be one of the best way to promote real, longtime learning. Also, it would be really helpful for students to develop skills for spatial visualization.
Here you have some songs that can make geometrical learning much more easy, and even dances implemented in real classes that show the utility and the internet promoted in students of geometrical learning:
That was all for today. I think it is a really fun way to learn, and I am sure it would produce great results. See you next time!
