Food and geometry

Hello everyone!

In today's post I will deal with a really appetizing theme: geometry in food.

Although it is something that is essential in our lives, children and sometimes even us adults do not realize that the food we eat is also based in geometrical concepts and shapes. However, they constitute a real and approachable way of seeing how geometry bases everything what is around us. For that reason, working with different food in class could be an outstanding way of teaching and working on geometrical knowledge in a manipulative, interesting way. Even more, other skills such as motor skills, coordination, confidence, independence and responsibility could be developed by the entire class, as preparing simple food in class and learning about them would be something of use for their lives not only at that moment but also for the rest of their lives.

In the following video, we can see a great activity for children. In it, children have to see the food that is in their houses and create a picnic menu in which the food must have the shape of different polygons, geometric bodies and round bodies. Thanks to it, children can make use of their likes and use them to complete the task, making them much more interested in its realization. In addition, just as the person in the video does, they could take to the class of photo of their picnic or a drawing to let their classmates categorize the food depending on the form they have, constituting a much more rich activity in which everyone interacts with others' work, learning and contracting their knowledge all together and on their own.

Another video that caught my attention was the following one, in which it can be seen how a school celebrates the mathematical-culinary days. In this, the students of sixth grade are the ones in charge of conducting the activities proposed for the rest of students, all of them relating geometry with different food and perspectives. Also, it is based in a cross-curricular perspective, as subjects such as Sciences are worked on with the building of an alimentation pyramid. It seems to mee as a really amazing way to work maths and geometry in a project where all students can participate as a whole, with students themselves who are the ones responsible, being great to favor their initiative, creativity, collaboration and exposition abilities. They even cook food with geometrical forms, making obvious the versatility of geometry and how easy it is in reality to work with them and allowing the improvement of the children's capacities of identifying and defining geometrical elements in what they see and create on a daily basis.

That was all for today, I hope you liked it and see you in the last post!
