Geometry in movies

Hello everyone!

This post will focus in one of the most important resources of entertainment of our times: movies.

Movies are really important in children's lives, who have constant and easy access to cinemas and platforms where they can see almost any movie at almost any time they want. The thing is that geometry is basically present in all movies one way or another, and by making children realize that this happens, even in what they normally watch, would be decisive for promoting their knowledge and conscience about geometry and foment a good, receptive attitude about it in their daily lives. Also, activities could be created from movie scenes, allowing a significative learning of geometry that involves identification of contents applied, making students be more open to the idea of geometry surrounding them by being present in many ways in their environment even if they did not realize it at first.

For example, in cartoons the main elements present are lines, straight or curve, that often create shapes. Like that, children could be asked to identify those lines and describe their difference from others, and even what type they are (perpendiculars, parallels..) or the possible angles they form. In addition, they could work on the shapes that are used, being an example of an activity identifying the type of shapes or polygons a determined character is created by. They could even be asked to create their own characters using only geometrical elements, so that they see the contents in an applicate way that is enjoyable for them.

Also, they could make use of movies in themselves to teach geometrical contents. For example, there is a movie about Duck Donald that is based in mathematics and geometry. These types of movies in which geometry concepts are clearly represented and are apt for children can be great ways of presenting new things to children in an attractive and easy way. Also, by the combination of an audiovisual resource and an adequate explication and contextualization, the learning produced is much more effective, efficient and significant for children, as they way the contents are presented in itself is key to satisfy the educational needs of a child. In addition, children themselves could bring to class examples of movie scenes in which geometrical contents appear, making education much more personalized and adjusted to the reality of the class and their interests, which makes a great difference in the attitude of the class to be taken when the teaching-learning process takes place.

I really believe that movies, as current elements of our day-to-day, should be used in an appropriate way to improve our children's learning, and I encourage all of you to think about implementing them in your classes. See you in the next post!
