Geometry in dance

Imagen
Hello everyone! Today is my last post, and I have decided to talk about dance as a way of learning geometry.  As we already know, dancing is a type of sport in which the objective is to follow a choreography with music by moving all the body in a specific way. This means every part of the body takes a concrete position, and consequently is pretty normal to represent geometrical elements while doing it. It can be something as simple as forming parallels lines with your arms or something more complex such as simulating the form of an sphere with hand gestures: the thing is that geometry is present in dance in ways that sometimes we do no even realize, as something as unconscious as the angle your legs form is essential for a dancer.  To use dance as a way to teach geometry is a great method, too. At the same time you are learning, you are moving your body, developing several skills in the process such as physical resistance, memory, coordination and motor skills, which will undo...

Food and geometry

Imagen
Hello everyone! In today's post I will deal with a really appetizing theme: geometry in food. Although it is something that is essential in our lives, children and sometimes even us adults do not realize that the food we eat is also based in geometrical concepts and shapes. However, they constitute a real and approachable way of seeing how geometry bases everything what is around us. For that reason, working with different food in class could be an outstanding way of teaching and working on geometrical knowledge in a manipulative, interesting way. Even more, other skills such as motor skills, coordination, confidence, independence and responsibility could be developed by the entire class, as preparing simple food in class and learning about them would be something of use for their lives not only at that moment but also for the rest of their lives.  In the following video, we can see a great activity for children. In it, children have to see the food that is in their houses and crea...

Geometry in movies

Imagen
Hello everyone! This post will focus in one of the most important resources of entertainment of our times: movies.  Movies are really important in children's lives, who have constant and easy access to cinemas and platforms where they can see almost any movie at almost any time they want. The thing is that geometry is basically present in all movies one way or another, and by making children realize that this happens, even in what they normally watch, would be decisive for promoting their knowledge and conscience about geometry and foment a good, receptive attitude about it in their daily lives. Also, activities could be created from movie scenes, allowing a significative learning of geometry that involves identification of contents applied, making students be more open to the idea of geometry surrounding them by being present in many ways in their environment even if they did not realize it at first. For example, in cartoons the main elements present are lines, straight or curve, ...

Physical activities and geometry

Imagen
Hello everyone! Based on what we talked in the previous post, I realized that another excellent way of working on geometry would be through physical activities. Typically, all the activities and lessons proposed in geometry teachings are based in the classroom, where students must be fitted without moving off their sits. However, as more studies are done about it, conclusions are being made about the real efficacy of this in relation to learning, and the results are showing the importance of movement for children to really learn. Their young age is clearly of great significance for this, because they are in the age of discovering their surroundings and their capacities without being able to stay lots of time paying attention to the same thing. Therefore, using physical movement in class, in this case in geometry classes, is a espectacular way of gaining knowledge at the same time that good attitudes about learning are being promoted, students are motivated and skills such as motor skil...

Nature as geometrical representations

Imagen
Hello everyone! In this post I will talk about a theme deeply related with geometry that can offer a great approach for geometrical learning in class: nature. Teaching geometry must have as maybe the most important basis the fact that it can be found in everything that surrounds us. Just like that, we must remark to our students that it is present even if it was not our purpose, realizing then that even the things that are not human made follow geometrical principles. This way, as non-human made things the first idea that must come to our minds is just one: nature. In both animals and plants geometrical figures can be observed, allowing great representations of geometry that can be used in geometrical learning for children to gain knowledge in a contextualized way. Also, through this kind of contextualization we promote a constant learning and attitude of constant observation of their surroundings, as they constantly are in direct contact with nature so they will unconsciously be relat...

Geometry and art

Imagen
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about an amazing way to work on geometry: art! It cannot be denied that art, one way or another, tends to implement geometrical elements. It can be something as simple as lines and points from more complex things as polygons and geometrical bodies. Being like that, it is only common sense to implement geometrical learning through artistic activities. In the first place, we already know that cross-curricular learning is the one as teachers we should aspire, as the truth is everything is connected in the world and therefore learning things as geometry aislares from the rest does not make any sense at all. Secondly, art is an appealing element no matter the object the interest. We must remember that art always have functionally, wether is a more complex or simple one. What is for sure is that art awakes emotions, feelings in us, children included, so working with it for geometrical learning can be really beneficial for their emotional and person...

Geometry through manipulative resources

Imagen
Hello everyone! Today I bring you some manipulative resources that could be a big help for your students to learn geometry. As we know, learning is the best obtained when it supposes that the learner has to do something. Therefore, the implementation of resources that require activity and manipulation, basically that requires students to do something rather than just listening or watching, are key for our teachers to guarantee comprehension, engagement and significant learning in our geometry classes. We must remember that geometry is related to the space they are in, so it would not make sense to teach these types of concepts merely in abstract ways that students do not really understand like that.  Here you have some examples and images of these type os resources and possible uses in geometry lessons:  Geoboard: it consists of a square board with nails forming a squared pattern so that colour elastic bands could be put. It is something that it is easy for students to intera...
