Geometry and art

Imagen
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about an amazing way to work on geometry: art! It cannot be denied that art, one way or another, tends to implement geometrical elements. It can be something as simple as lines and points from more complex things as polygons and geometrical bodies. Being like that, it is only common sense to implement geometrical learning through artistic activities. In the first place, we already know that cross-curricular learning is the one as teachers we should aspire, as the truth is everything is connected in the world and therefore learning things as geometry aislares from the rest does not make any sense at all. Secondly, art is an appealing element no matter the object the interest. We must remember that art always have functionally, wether is a more complex or simple one. What is for sure is that art awakes emotions, feelings in us, children included, so working with it for geometrical learning can be really beneficial for their emotional and person...

Geometry through manipulative resources

Imagen
Hello everyone! Today I bring you some manipulative resources that could be a big help for your students to learn geometry. As we know, learning is the best obtained when it supposes that the learner has to do something. Therefore, the implementation of resources that require activity and manipulation, basically that requires students to do something rather than just listening or watching, are key for our teachers to guarantee comprehension, engagement and significant learning in our geometry classes. We must remember that geometry is related to the space they are in, so it would not make sense to teach these types of concepts merely in abstract ways that students do not really understand like that.  Here you have some examples and images of these type os resources and possible uses in geometry lessons:  Geoboard: it consists of a square board with nails forming a squared pattern so that colour elastic bands could be put. It is something that it is easy for students to intera...

Geometry learning through songs

Imagen
Hello everyone! Today I bring you a great idea to make children learn geometry in a funny way: music! If we know a child since they are very young, we know that one of the things they enjoy the most is listening to different kinds of music and songs. Taking that into account, we are also able to see that it continues to be present as they grow old, overall having a great interest in listening to music and dancing. Because of this, we can suppose that implementing songs for learning in class, in this case geometrical contents, would be a great way of potentiating a significant, easy learning.  Some of the advantages of learning through songs are the following:  Memory improvement: linguistic structures are learned easier if it is done through music. By using the geometrical contents as part of the song lyrics, accompanied with melody and rhythm, children will be more open to memorize them and it will happen in a more fluid way through a more participative attitude of the stude...

Geometry with photography

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about a really interesting way of working geometry with students: photography . Just as we mentioned before, our students are as years pass by more and more digital natives, meaning that their lives are deeply influenced by new technologies. For that reason, it is only reasonable that we include them as tools for making geometry something children understand, recognize and apply in various situations of their lives. Having that in mind, I cannot forget to mention the mathematical photography contests that were celebrated in my educational centers where I was a student.  Basically, the whole idea of these were to capture an image of the real world in which any mathematical element could be seen . The possibilities were infinite: you could focus on geometrical figures/bodies, symmetries, figures's movements, mosaics, perspectives... That was up to you, you would have to pay attention to the things around you and recognize the diff...
